ARTIST BIO

Born in New York and raised in Florida and New Jersey, Cristóbal Torres Iglesias is a Miami-based Cuban-American artist; and a friar and Catholic priest in the Dominican Order.  Cristóbal’s work explores the fusion of image and narrative in comics and in the history of sacred art, and has such wide-ranging influences as Eastern and Western Christian iconography, Ibero-American and Afro-Cuban popular religiosities, and sequential storytelling in the comic book medium. 

Cristóbal approaches his iconographical pieces and his graphic novel work as a visual theological narrative that reflects the artist's critical engagement of his subject matter and more importantly, bears to others the fruits of contemplation. Cristóbal hopes his work will stimulate observers' engagement of their own questions, even as it invites them to deepen and expand their personal encounter with the sacred. 

Cristóbal’s work is in private collections and may be seen on display in places such as St. Albert the Great Priory in Irving, Texas, Notre Dame du Perpetuel Secours School in La Colline, Haiti, and the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. 

His iconographical work includes the painting Dominican Last Supper; the design for the Cor Jesu Chapel icon cross at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida (2016); and the designs for the St. Rose of Lima Chapel windows at Zanmi Beni Children’s Home in Port au Prince, Haiti.  His comics and graphic novel work includes the recently published first issue of About Time, on which he collaborated with writer Dino Barlaam.  He is currently one of the artists featured on the Caliber Comics graphic novel series The Shepherd.

2013 - Window designs for St. Rose of Lima Chapel at Zanmi Beni Children’s Home in Port au Prince, Haiti.

2014 - Notre Dame du Perpetuel Secours School Mural at La Colline, Haiti.

2016 - Art for the first issue of the comic series About Time.

From November 22, 2016 to January 23, 2017, the Cor Jesu Chapel icon cross design was part of the Auguri exhibition in Rome, at the Basilica of Santa Sabina.

In January of 2017, Dominican Last Supper was part of a traveling exhibition in Australia featuring four Dominican artists.

2017 - Several iconographical pieces were featured in Freedom and Responsibility: Weaving the Threads of Dominican Spirituality, published by ATF Press, Australia.

2018 – Art featured in volumes 2 and 3 of the graphic novel series The Shepherd: The Path of Souls, and The Shepherd: The Path of Dogs, published by Caliber Comics.
